How to Use a Shampoo Bar
It’s not complicated. It’s just been overcomplicated.
Shampoo bars are not new. They existed long before plastic bottles, and they’ll still be here long after.
The only thing that changed was packaging. The way you wash your hair? That stayed the same.
Wet the hair. Clean the scalp. Build the lather. Rinse properly.
The Straight Answer
This is how you actually use it
Fully wet your hair. Wet the bar. Apply mainly at the scalp. Massage the lather through the roots. Rinse thoroughly.
Repeat if needed, then follow with conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends.
That’s it. That’s the method.
Hairdresser Truth
Shampoo opens. Conditioner closes.
Shampoo cleans the scalp and opens the hair cuticle so buildup, oil, and residue can be removed.
Conditioner smooths the hair and helps close that cuticle back down, giving softness and shine.
They do different jobs. That’s why I don’t believe in all-in-one products.
Two shampoos. One conditioner. That’s the method I’ve used for years.
Step by Step
How to use a shampoo bar properly
Step 1: Wet your hair properly
If your hair isn’t fully soaked, everything else falls apart.
Step 2: Wet the bar
Just enough to help it glide and lather easily.
Step 3: Apply at the scalp
That’s where oil and buildup live.
Step 4: Massage
Use your fingertips. You don’t need to scrub aggressively.
Step 5: Rinse properly
Most issues come from poor rinsing.
Step 6: Repeat if needed
First wash lifts buildup. Second wash cleans properly.
Let’s Talk About the “Squeak”
Clean hair has always had a sound
In hairdressing, we used to say — if you don’t hear the squeak, it’s not properly clean.
Now people say that means your hair is stripped.
That’s not quite right.
The squeak comes from clean hair — from removing buildup and oil properly.
You don’t add more product to force it. It happens when your technique is right.
Common Mistakes
Where things usually go wrong
Hair not wet enough
Leads to weak lather and uneven cleansing.
Scrubbing the ends
Keep shampoo focused at the scalp.
Using too much
Bars are concentrated. You don’t need much.
Poor rinsing
This is the biggest issue. Rinse properly.
Storage
How to make your bar last
Store on a draining dish
Keep out of standing water
Let it dry between uses
Use a tin or bag when travelling
If you leave it under running water, it will disappear. It’s a solid product, not a bottled one.
The Real Shift
You’re not just changing products
When you choose a shampoo bar, you’re choosing to be more intentional.
Less packaging. Less waste. More awareness of what you’re using and how you’re using it.
Same clean. Different mindset.
