Why Healthy Hair Isn’t About Using More Product

The healthiest hair I’ve seen wasn’t owned by the people with the fullest bathroom shelves.

After years behind the salon chair, one lesson became impossible to ignore: healthier hair rarely comes from adding more products. It comes from understanding the ones you already have.

Walk into almost any beauty store and you’ll see shelves stretching from floor to ceiling.

Shampoos. Conditioners. Masks. Leave-in treatments. Hair oils. Heat protectants. Serums. Texture sprays. Gloss sprays. Curl creams. Mousses. Foams. Dry shampoos.

Every bottle promises healthier, shinier or stronger hair.

It’s easy to believe that beautiful hair simply requires buying one more product.

But after working as a hairdresser, washing thousands of heads of hair and helping clients with every hair type imaginable, I learnt something very different.

Healthy hair isn’t built by collecting products. It’s built by understanding your hair.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your routine isn’t buying another bottle.

Sometimes it’s simplifying everything.

Marketing taught us to buy more

The beauty industry has become incredibly good at convincing us we always need another solution.

Hair feeling dry? Buy another mask.

Hair looking dull? Try a shine spray.

Hair frizzy? Add another serum.

Roots oily? Buy another shampoo.

While many of these products genuinely have a place, they aren’t automatically the answer.

Sometimes dry hair isn’t asking for another product.

It’s asking for less heat.

Sometimes oily hair doesn’t need stronger shampoo.

It simply needs a better washing technique.

Sometimes brittle hair isn’t lacking another treatment.

It needs fewer chemical services or more gentle handling.

The biggest shift often comes from changing habits rather than changing products.

What I learnt behind the salon chair

As hairdressers, we don’t just see hair once.

We watch it over months and years.

We notice how it changes after colour. After holidays. After pregnancy. After illness. After switching routines.

One thing became surprisingly consistent.

The clients with the healthiest-looking hair weren’t always using the most expensive products or the largest collections.

Many had very simple routines.

  • They cleansed their scalp properly.
  • They conditioned where the hair actually needed it.
  • They protected their hair from unnecessary heat.
  • They brushed gently.
  • They understood their own hair instead of chasing every trend.

Healthy hair wasn’t about excess.

It was about consistency.

Understanding your hair changes everything

Hair is incredibly resilient, but it isn’t indestructible.

Every strand is made up of several layers working together.

The outer layer is called the cuticle.

Think of it like tiny overlapping scales protecting everything underneath.

When those scales sit smoothly, hair reflects light more evenly.

That’s what contributes to healthy-looking shine.

When the cuticle becomes rough through colouring, heat styling, friction or weathering, hair can become more difficult to manage.

It may feel rougher. Tangle more easily. Appear dull. Or simply lose some of its softness.

Beneath the cuticle sits the cortex.

This is where much of your hair’s strength, elasticity and natural pigment exist.

Understanding these layers helps explain why healthy hair isn’t created by coating the outside with endless products.

Instead, it’s about supporting the condition of the strand through gentle care and appropriate products.

Why more product isn’t always better

Hair can only absorb and hold so much.

Applying twice as much shampoo doesn’t necessarily clean your hair twice as well.

Adding excessive conditioner doesn’t automatically create softer hair.

Often the excess simply rinses away or leaves unnecessary residue behind.

That’s why I often remind clients:

More isn’t always better. Better is better.

Using the right amount of the right product in the right place almost always produces better results than simply using more.

It also means less waste, lower costs and a simpler routine.

Shampoo and conditioner have different jobs

One of the biggest misunderstandings I see is treating shampoo and conditioner as though they do the same thing.

They don’t.

Shampoo is designed primarily to cleanse the scalp.

It helps remove:

  • natural oils
  • sweat
  • environmental buildup
  • styling product residue
  • everyday dirt

Conditioner serves a different purpose.

It helps support the older sections of the hair strand, particularly the mid-lengths and ends, which have experienced the greatest amount of wear over time.

When people understand these different roles, they often discover they need far less product than they originally thought.

Not every hair problem needs another bottle

It’s tempting to think every hair concern has a matching product waiting on the shelf.

Sometimes that’s true.

But not always.

Hair that feels dry may actually need less heat styling.

Hair that feels heavy may benefit from removing buildup rather than adding another treatment.

Fine hair may simply need lighter conditioning techniques.

Healthy hair starts with asking the right question before reaching for another bottle.

What does my hair actually need today?

Protein, moisture and finding the right balance

One of the biggest misconceptions in haircare is believing every hair problem can be solved with more conditioner.

While moisture is incredibly important, healthy hair is often about balance rather than excess.

Some hair benefits from extra hydration.

Other hair may need strengthening ingredients or simply a gentler routine.

Over-processed hair, coloured hair and heat-damaged hair can all behave differently, which is why understanding your own hair is far more valuable than following every trend online.

Instead of asking,

“What product should I buy next?”

Try asking,

“What is my hair trying to tell me?”

Sometimes the answer is moisture. Sometimes it’s protection. Sometimes it’s simply leaving your hair alone for a while.

The routine I still recommend today

People are often surprised when I explain that my favourite salon routine hasn’t really changed over the years.

It isn’t complicated.

  • Wet the hair thoroughly.
  • First shampoo to break down oil, dirt and product buildup.
  • Second shampoo to properly cleanse the scalp.
  • Apply conditioner mainly through the mid-lengths and ends.
  • Leave the conditioner on briefly before rinsing thoroughly.
  • Allow the hair to dry as gently as possible.

Simple routines are often the routines we actually stick to.

Consistency beats complexity almost every time.

Healthy hair doesn’t have to be expensive

One of the nicest things about simplifying your routine is that it often saves money as well.

Instead of buying products because they’re trending, you begin purchasing products because they genuinely serve a purpose.

That shift changes everything.

Rather than filling cupboards with half-used bottles, you begin building a small collection that works together.

The result isn’t just less clutter.

It’s often healthier hair, less waste and a more enjoyable routine.

Great Hair. Great Land. Great Life.

Living on rural land has changed the way I think about beauty.

Out here, life naturally becomes simpler.

You become more aware of what you buy, what you throw away and what genuinely adds value to your everyday life.

That philosophy naturally found its way into Cooper Delivered.

We don’t believe sustainability has to be complicated.

We believe beautiful hair can exist alongside thoughtful choices.

Great hair doesn’t need twenty different products.

Sometimes it simply needs knowledge, patience and a routine that respects both your hair and the planet.

Great Hair.
Great Land.
Great Life.

Life on the block

Building an off-grid life in regional Western Australia constantly reminds me that resources matter.

Water is collected. Power is generated. Packaging arrives after travelling hundreds of kilometres.

Living this way naturally encourages simpler routines.

Instead of asking,

“What else do I need?”

I find myself asking,

“Can I achieve the same result with less?”

That mindset has influenced every Cooper Delivered product we’ve created.

Not because less is trendy.

Because thoughtful routines usually become the most sustainable ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use too much shampoo?

Yes. More shampoo doesn’t necessarily clean better. A thorough cleanse using the correct amount is usually more effective than using excessive product.

Should conditioner go on the scalp?

In most cases, conditioner is best applied through the mid-lengths and ends where the hair is oldest and naturally drier.

Does expensive haircare always work better?

Not necessarily. Choosing products suited to your hair type and using them correctly is often more important than price.

Can too many products weigh hair down?

Yes. Layering unnecessary products may leave some hair types feeling heavier or contribute to product buildup.

Why do hairdressers recommend two shampoos?

The first shampoo helps loosen oil and buildup. The second shampoo can cleanse the scalp more effectively once that initial layer has been removed.

Is a simple haircare routine enough?

For many people, absolutely. A consistent routine using appropriate products often produces better long-term results than constantly changing products.

Healthy hair starts with understanding, not collecting

Beautiful hair isn’t created by owning every product on the shelf.

It’s created through knowledge, consistency and using the right products with intention.

When you simplify your routine, you often discover something surprising.

Your hair doesn’t need more.

It simply needs better care.

Healthy hair isn’t about using more product.
It’s about using the right product, in the right place, for the right reason.
