Hairdressing taught me that hair is never just hair.
It is identity, creativity, confidence, culture and connection — whether you are in a salon chair, scrolling TikTok or standing in your own bathroom mirror.
One of the proudest days of my life was becoming a qualified hairdresser.
Hairdressing is not just a job.
It is an institution of learning, creativity and constant evolution.

Where my love of hair began
My mum and nana were not hairdressers.
But like so many women of their generation, they took hair into their own hands.
Home perms. Home colours. Kitchen-sink makeovers.
That resourcefulness shaped how I saw hair.
Where they improvised, I trained.
And while I would not recommend everyone try a perm at home, I can say their influence gave me an appreciation for hair as something cultural, practical and deeply personal.
Social media and the performance of hair
Although I am no longer behind the chair full-time, I have watched the industry shift dramatically.
Social media has transformed hairdressing into a stage.
It is not just about the cut anymore.
It is about the show.
Lights. Camera. Action.
Every snip can be broadcast. Every curl can be recorded. Every transformation can become content.
There are positives.
- faster exposure
- instant portfolios
- creative sharing
- education across borders
- new opportunities for stylists
But there are costs too.
- privacy fades
- intimacy changes
- pressure increases
- the client relationship can become performance
The ritual of trust between client and hairdresser should never be overshadowed by the need to go viral.
The rising cost of beauty
Beauty has always been an investment.
But today, prices can feel unattainable for many people.
A $2,000 salon bill gets judged.
A $12 box dye gets judged too.
As a hairdresser, I will admit it — I used to cringe at box dyes.
But here is the truth:
Not everyone can afford salon prices.
And if colouring your hair at home is what makes you feel beautiful, why should anyone shame that?
Hair should never be about judgement.
It should be about choice, empowerment and ritual in whatever form works for your life.
Falling into PermTok
One of my guilty pleasures lately has been scrolling TikTok.
Somewhere in my late-night swiping, I fell into PermTok — and I have not looked back.
I wanted defined, messy curls that fit my off-grid lifestyle, so I gave myself what I jokingly call a bush perm.

A little mousse. A little scrunching. A little patience.
And honestly?
I loved it.
Life on the block: why curls made sense

When every watt comes from the sun and every litre comes from a tank, daily straightening starts to feel unrealistic.
Curls, messy and wild, became freedom.
They worked with my lifestyle instead of fighting it.
Haircare became less about perfection and more about practicality.
Less heat. Less pressure. More freedom.
Hair will always be ritual
Hair is culture.
Hair is expression.
Hair is the frame for the beautiful picture of your face.
Whether you are behind the chair, scrolling TikTok, experimenting in your bathroom or learning how to simplify your routine, hair remains deeply personal.
